1. Leaking:

Clean the balancing cartridge. Check to ensure the two oval o-rings on the back of the cartridge and the two springs loaded washers at the front are in place. Make sure there is no debris in the valve body (where the cartridge will sit into) or on the cartridge itself. Flushing the cartridge out under running water may also help to flush out any particles that may be in the cartridge cavities. Reassemble cartridge, stem, bonnet assembly, handle and screw in securely to the valve with supplied screws. Turn on the water to test. If the unit continues to leak, replace the balancing cartridge:

  • For units purchased before 1997 replace with (974-491) and the stem bonnet assembly (971-150). NOTE: Cartridge (974-491) and stem bonnet assembly (971-150) have been replaced with (974-291) and the stem and the bonnet assembly (971-250).
  • If purchased after 1997 replace with (974-291) and stem and the bonnet assembly (971-250). For newer units purchased after 2004, replace with cartridge (974-042) (one piece).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Turn water off from the main water supply usually around the house before attempting to remove the cartridge & valve stem from the main valve.

2. How to remove and replace the cartridge on 0X8 series:

Please view the following video for step by step instructions on how to replace the cartridge for the Pfister 0X8 series.

3. Water flows from the spout while using the shower:

The seal inside of the diverter mechanism may have become dislodged. The spout may need replacement.

4. Water flows from the showerhead while filling the tub:

Check the position of the valve body, letters "SHWR" should be stamped on the top portion of the cast and "TUB" on the bottom.
Caution:

Reducing outlet supply pipe diameter is not recommended! Be sure the diameter of pipe being used is ½” (INSIDE) and all recommended pipe lengths are met. Using reduced inside diameter (less than ½”) or less than minimum recommended pipe lengths will cause back pressure and water will flow from the shower head while filling the tub.

5. Water flow is very low:

Check the balancing cartridge for debris. Sediment where the water enters. The shower head can also cause this symptom.

6. Installing Upside down:

The 08; 808 series valve can't be installed unside down because of the configuration of the valve body. The hole inside the body has to be on the bottom to direct the flow to the spout. In a shower only application, the tub hole will direct the water back through the body up to the shower. This can't be done if the body is upside down (inlet holes facing up. The letters "SHWR" should be cast into the top and "TUB" on the bottom. If 08 series valve is installed upside down, water flows from the shower head while filling the tub.

7. Water starts out hot and becomes cooler as handle is rotated counter clockwise:

This is a potentially hazardous situation and should be corrected before using the unit. Check the hot and cold inlet positions. If you have a back to back installation, (where hot and cold inlets are reversed) refer to your installation manual for back to back installation instructions.

8. Water doesn't get hot enough:

Click on the video link below to to view instructions on how to adjust the temperature range. You can also refer to the "Valve Body" instructions manual (under documents below) for written instructions on how to adjust the temperature.

9. Spout Nipple & Shower Arm:
The spout nipple should be 1/2" line. We recommend using an copper or iron pipe. The length for it for an installation with flange should be 1/2" line 4" 1/2 length, and without flange 4" from the finish wall out.  The thread size on the shower arm is 1/2" x 14 threads per inch.

10. Shower ONLY installation:
The 08; 808 series valve can be installed as a shower only unit with no decrease in performance

11. Hanover handle screws:
If you need the stem extender screw, handle set screw, handle hub screws or the hex wrench, there is a hardware bag that includes all these part(s) (962-024).

12. Valve plug:
If you need a solder plug for the valve the plug number is (972-827). The number for the 1/2 MALE IP threaded plug is 962-036.

13. Changing handles/ Updating trim:
  • If you would like to change the handles (style) from cross to lever or from lever to cross you can do so by just changing the handle with an SGL kit  (SGL-****, where **** means style & finish you'd like to get).
  • If you have an old tub & shower design (with 2 screws holding flange against the wall), you need to retrofit fit the valve with a new cartridge 974-042 along with the 4 screw hole plate 960-460 and screws 971-910 (4) (which will allow you to put new style trim over the old valve body installed into the wall.
14. Extension Kit: - (it extends up to 1")
  • 910-563A for Single Control Valve Body Pressure Balanced Assembly - POLISHED CHROME finish. Includes Stem Extension, Sleeve Extension and Screw Adapter.. (Requires one kit per valve body)
  • 910-563E for Single Control Valve Body Pressure Balanced Assembly - RUSTIC PEWTER finish.. Includes Stem Extension, Sleeve Extension and Screw Adapter.. (Requires one kit per valve body.)
  • 910-563K for Single Control Valve Body Pressure Balanced Assembly - BRUSHED NICKEL finish.. Includes Stem Extension, Sleeve Extension and Screw Adapter. (Requires one kit per valve body.)

  • 910-563Y for Single Control Valve Body Pressure Balanced Assembly - TUSCAN BRONZE finish.. Includes Stem Extension, Sleeve Extension and Screw Adapter. (Requires one kit per valve body.)
15. Longer sleeve:
If you need only a longer sleeve to cover the gap between the sleeve and the handle, you need to order 972-002A - polished chrome, 972-002E - rustic pewter, 972-002J - brushed knickle, 972-002U - rustic bronze, 972-002Y - tuscan bronze.  These are ordered individually (one per unit).
